Hi,

I have been using mod_rewrite for quite a while now without fully understanding it. Every time I come across something difficult I usually get someone else to write it for me. I need to get someone to actually tell me what some of this stuff means!

I need a simple script that will re-write URLs and tidy them up a bit. Ths is what I have so far, but I don't really understand it and it doesn't work. Could anyone show me how to fix it and explain what it means?

Code: Select all

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^([0-9a-z-A-Z])?$ index.php?page=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^([0-9a-z-A-Z])/([0-9a-z-A-Z])?$ index.php?page=$1&sub=$2 [L]
RewriteRule ^([0-9a-z-A-Z])/([0-9a-z-A-Z])/([0-9a-z-A-Z])?$ index.php?page=$1&sub=$2&child=$3 [L]

As you can see it is a bit of an improvisation.

Thanks

Hi, I found your forum through PHP.ie as I was searching for a usergroup to try and catch up with people face to face to discuss the intricacies of PHP. I have just completed a intense 6 month full time web design course using HTML, CSS and XML with a little bit of PHP and MySQL thrown in amongst other stuff. I am about to embark on a 5 month full time PHP MySQl course in Mid November and hopefully that will give me plenty of experience to get going in this area. What I would like to know is this: "Is there a social group of PHP users that might meet up in Dublin to discuss the PHP and MySQL language". It would be very benefitical to the likes of myself to learn and discuss the PHP MySQL Language. If anybody has any helpful suggestions please reply. Thanks for your time. Vincent.

Hi guys iv only recently started to look at PHP, mainly out of curiosity. I done a basic web design course in college but dropped out as it was full of allot of fluff and unrelated topics. I had a strong attraction towards HTML and CSS and want to delve further into web development in my own time.

After browsing the web and doing some digging, many many people kept stating that PHP is essential for a decent website. Now while iv searched the php.net site and tried to understand what it does i just cant seem to work it out. After working with HTML and CSS my skills are pretty much capped at being able to create pages and style the content appropriately.

What exactly can PHP do for me and my learning? What are the possibilities and why is it so essential to learn? Im struggling to work out how it fits in and what exactly it does.

What else needs to go along with PHP? Iv read online and it seems the suggestions are relevant to the person. Some say i need to learn JAVA other say AJAX. Just when i thought i could be happy and learn PHP it seems iv to learn many other things too which is very daunting. Is XHTML/CSS and PHP enough to make decent websites or do i need to learn more, or is it a simple case of "it depends on the site" ?

With so many people offering different suggestions, im quickly getting deterred about even getting involved!! Any help would be much obliged and appreciated.

Would anyone be interested in helping me beta test a PHP/Apache auto-configuration plugin for Eclipse Mac OSX? The plugin will be part of AppKit, a yet to be published open source project currently in development. The plugin does a very simple job- you create a PHP project (with PDT I assume!), right click on it, select AppKit -> Convert To AppKit Project and the tool

- creates a secure 'best-practice' directory structure for you in the project,
- generates a virtual host configuration with the name of the project as the virtual host name,
- creates symlinks to your project files to make your virtual host available and enabled on localhost for development and testing.

All you have to do is manually add the virtual host name to your systems hosts file after you run it (something that I would also like to eventually automate, once the security constraints have been worked out). I eventually hope for the AppKit plugin to support Win and Linux, so do feel free to contact me if you are also familiar with Apache/PHP stacks and development on those OS's.

Please email appkit@ondevice.ie with your details if you're interested or would like any more information. Looking forward to hearing from you!

David Foley | Senior Architect
OnDevice.ie

I do a lot of development in it but I also know that it has a bad rep amongst a lot of php developers out there. Personally I feel this is unjustified but I'm curious to here the communities opinions on it and maybe I can dispel a few myths or point out some features that people are largely unaware of.

Hi,

My host does not allow me to use the shell_exec() function, which is understandable enough! So I have been trying to figure out a way of unzipping large files in PHP.

I have tried using unzip.lib.php http://www.koders.com/php/fidC24DE94469E1C2E7FEA00F3AD26688559729E7A4.aspx?s=excel
but it has a limit of 8 meg to the zip size. I added this to replace lines 246 and 247:

Code: Select all

                $bytes_to_read=$this->Size;
                $byte_size_packages=$bytes_to_read/8000;
                $bytes_read=0;
                $oF=fopen($in_FileName,'rb');
                $vZ=0;
                while($bytes_read<$bytes_to_read){
                        $vZ_part=@fread($oF,$byte_size_packages);
                        if(strlen($vZ_part)==0)
                                break;
                        $vZ.=$vZ_part;
                        $bytes_read+=$byte_size_packages;
                }

I had to do that because the old fread() function was exhausting it's 8meg limit. But still I get this error:

Code: Select all

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 133188854 bytes) in unzip.lib.php on line 258

Is there anyway of actually unzipping say a 60meg file in PHP without having a memory problem?

Hi everyone
I am new to this forum and not that conversant with php although i tend to look at php coding very carefully, copy bits to paste somewhere else and then edit.

The current problem i'm having is that whenever i try to open up a particular file in a broswe it opens in dreamweaver. i have checked the folder options in control panel, and can only find what application to edit php files in but nothing about what it should open up with. Do i need to set changes in dreamweaver and if yes, can someone kindly point me to the right direction?
Thank you all in advance.

Bol

Hi,

I have made a shopping cart for my website. At the moment the method of payment is very awkward. I would like to get rid of it as soon as I can!

Does anyone know how to go about writing a PHP script that connects to PayPal and sends a PayPal Payment Request to the customers email address? Could you suggest the general outline for this script and let me fill in the blanks? Or even a link to an existing online tutorial that does so.

Or even better, I would like to look into paying for something through a shopping cart using PayPal but not necessarily having to go to the PayPal website to transfer funds. The thing that I don't like about some shopping carts is that you are directed to PayPal to pay. Once you leave the old website the script writer has very minimal control over what happens in PayPal. I would like something that does all the work such as connecting to Paypal, verifying login information and transferring funds in the background so that the user is not driven mad switching between sites. Would this method be considered secure?

Also is it possible, or necessary, to get some sort of security certificate for your website that says that you are a valid business and ensures the customer that what they pay for will actually be delivered?!

Thanks for all help
