Hi, I found your forum through PHP.ie as I was searching for a usergroup to try and catch up with people face to face to discuss the intricacies of PHP. I have just completed a intense 6 month full time web design course using HTML, CSS and XML with a little bit of PHP and MySQL thrown in amongst other stuff. I am about to embark on a 5 month full time PHP MySQl course in Mid November and hopefully that will give me plenty of experience to get going in this area. What I would like to know is this: "Is there a social group of PHP users that might meet up in Dublin to discuss the PHP and MySQL language". It would be very benefitical to the likes of myself to learn and discuss the PHP MySQL Language. If anybody has any helpful suggestions please reply. Thanks for your time. Vincent.

you need a server-side language, a database, and the client-side languages.

on the client-side, there is basically just HTML, CSS and JavaScript. you have no alternatives - you must learn those. (no, Flash and Java are not alternatives)

on the server-side, you have more options. personally, I prefer PHP and MySQL.

if you don't know why you would want to learn these, then you don't need to know them - you're obviously not yet the kind of person that needs to know these things.

but, if you want to be a good web programmer, you will need to choose at least one server-side language to learn.

Hi guys iv only recently started to look at PHP, mainly out of curiosity. I done a basic web design course in college but dropped out as it was full of allot of fluff and unrelated topics. I had a strong attraction towards HTML and CSS and want to delve further into web development in my own time.

After browsing the web and doing some digging, many many people kept stating that PHP is essential for a decent website. Now while iv searched the php.net site and tried to understand what it does i just cant seem to work it out. After working with HTML and CSS my skills are pretty much capped at being able to create pages and style the content appropriately.

What exactly can PHP do for me and my learning? What are the possibilities and why is it so essential to learn? Im struggling to work out how it fits in and what exactly it does.

What else needs to go along with PHP? Iv read online and it seems the suggestions are relevant to the person. Some say i need to learn JAVA other say AJAX. Just when i thought i could be happy and learn PHP it seems iv to learn many other things too which is very daunting. Is XHTML/CSS and PHP enough to make decent websites or do i need to learn more, or is it a simple case of "it depends on the site" ?

With so many people offering different suggestions, im quickly getting deterred about even getting involved!! Any help would be much obliged and appreciated.

Unfortunately for me I have to develop a lot on it. Plug In, Modules, and most of all a big compnent.

Documentation is uncomplete, local conventions are sometimes very restrictive (I have a lot of templates named only "default.php"). Anyway it's real MVC inside. But you have to follow their way of doing all the time and it makes developments to be slow.

Cheers

Stef

A payslip manager, multi language, multi country. You can admin taxes and charges by country, confirm them by company, indicate timesheet per employee, and generate the payslip.

Intersting stuff, with stored procedures , LaTeX and a HUGE database. I can generate French payslips with the French tax system which is one of the most complicated system of the world, so I think I can do it for every country.

I need to have time to finish it but I generate the payslips at this stage (pdf). I need to finish it and to implement the restrictions allowing me to sell the generated payslips (account managers, billing part, etc...).

I'm not sure I will put open source anyway. There are YEARS of work on it and I need to think of my future and to make some money for my old times.

Anyway, to answer my question, this is the big project I work on during my free times, week ends and blank days

Cheers

S.L.

Would anyone be interested in helping me beta test a PHP/Apache auto-configuration plugin for Eclipse Mac OSX? The plugin will be part of AppKit, a yet to be published open source project currently in development. The plugin does a very simple job- you create a PHP project (with PDT I assume!), right click on it, select AppKit -> Convert To AppKit Project and the tool

- creates a secure 'best-practice' directory structure for you in the project,
- generates a virtual host configuration with the name of the project as the virtual host name,
- creates symlinks to your project files to make your virtual host available and enabled on localhost for development and testing.

All you have to do is manually add the virtual host name to your systems hosts file after you run it (something that I would also like to eventually automate, once the security constraints have been worked out). I eventually hope for the AppKit plugin to support Win and Linux, so do feel free to contact me if you are also familiar with Apache/PHP stacks and development on those OS's.

Please email appkit@ondevice.ie with your details if you're interested or would like any more information. Looking forward to hearing from you!

David Foley | Senior Architect
OnDevice.ie

Hi,

My host does not allow me to use the shell_exec() function, which is understandable enough! So I have been trying to figure out a way of unzipping large files in PHP.

I have tried using unzip.lib.php http://www.koders.com/php/fidC24DE94469E1C2E7FEA00F3AD26688559729E7A4.aspx?s=excel
but it has a limit of 8 meg to the zip size. I added this to replace lines 246 and 247:

Code: Select all

                $bytes_to_read=$this->Size;
                $byte_size_packages=$bytes_to_read/8000;
                $bytes_read=0;
                $oF=fopen($in_FileName,'rb');
                $vZ=0;
                while($bytes_read<$bytes_to_read){
                        $vZ_part=@fread($oF,$byte_size_packages);
                        if(strlen($vZ_part)==0)
                                break;
                        $vZ.=$vZ_part;
                        $bytes_read+=$byte_size_packages;
                }

I had to do that because the old fread() function was exhausting it's 8meg limit.
yeah I'd never heard of it either. not surprisingly, considering it costs money and there are loads of IDEs out there that are free!

macoy, full on IDEs (integrated development environments) like mpsoftware can be very useful but kae is dead right, you don't need them.. in fact, until you get to a point where you're getting productive with the language (which might be a while) and actually woking on projects you'd probably best avoid them. a lot of IDEs have their own learning curve. add that to the learning curve you already have learning a whole new language and you'll have a lot on your plate! if you want to follow all the introductory tutorials you read, a simple text editor should suffice really; if you're using a PC (which you are because you said you installed WAMP right?) then crimson editor (http://www.crimsoneditor.com/) or notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm) are a bit of a step up from notepad if you want a general purpose code editor with syntax highlighting and other useful stuff that'll make your life a little easier

also they're both free. down the road if you're looking for a more functional IDE for projects and the like there are loads of free/open source ones out there. eclipse is a good choice.

finally, another intro tutorial: http://www.tizag.com/phpT/

when the time is right you can start reading up on mysql and databases there too. have fun!

hi there

I'm assuming that if you want to build a website you have some experience with HTML/CSS. if you don't you should look into learning these first because otherwise PHP won't be much good to you, at least for building websites. if you do have web authoring experience, then you've made a good start downloading and installing an IDE and an environment where you can start working with PHP.

there are oodles of sites out there where you can start learning about scripting and programming. alternatively, you could pick up a beginner PHP book in your local library or bookshop. either way, PHP is a very popular language so you'll have no problem tracking down something useful.

the first step to take with any computer language is to know what it is and what it can do. there is a brief introduction on php.net here: http://us3.php.net/manual/en/getting-started.php. then you can start to get to grips with the nuts and bolts of the language; the basics in other words. for a quick synopsis, the php.net language reference (http://ie.php.net/manual/en/langref.php) is probably as good a place to start as any here. you'll learn about the basic syntax of the language, values/types, variables, control structures etc. etc. as this is a fairly comprehensive summary of the language, you might find there are a lot of things you won't understand, but I'd say certainly read about:

the basic syntax of PHP

values and some of the "primitive" value types (boolean, integers, floats, strings)

variables (which are containers for values)

operators (addition, subtraction, multiplication, concatenation and more)

control structures (loops and conditional statements)

from a beginner's point-of-view the language reference might be a little technical, so it is good to read around. the w3c do quick and easy tutorials on many subjects, including PHP, which can be found here: http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_syntax.asp.

don't stop there though... look everywhere. if there's something that you can't understand, google it. and as you learn more, when you get into PHP's extensive library of built in functions, remember that php.net's function reference is your friend and ask LOTS of questions. I'm sure there are people around here who will be more than happy to help.

I wouldn't worry if there are things that you don't understand at first; there's a hell of a lot to learn and it can take a while to get into the programming mindset. the key is to start slowly, and practice what you do understand; it's a language so you need to build up your vocabulary. this takes time but I personally think it can be a very rewarding experience more than a challenge or a chore. Once you start to learn more and more, you'll find that you'll have many "eureka" moments and new things will make sense. I can remember when arrays used to baffle me senseless! the basic rule is practice, practice, practice. this infers lots of time and dedication. I think you need to have a certain passion for programming to make the commitment, but you'll know quickly enough whether it's for you and if you do enjoy it you're sure to find it a very rewarding experience...

D
